Ethiopia's stunning green highlands were a welcome change from the Sudan sands. Unfortunately the dramatic landscape is tainted by harsh conditions for cyclists. After analysing the situation and listening to advice of cyclists ahead of us, we made the tough decision to bus through Northern Ethiopia and begin our cycle journey again in Arba Minch. Ethiopia is densely populated and cyclists have become a target as they cycle through towns and villages. Recurring incidents include;
children throwing stones, swinging machetes, pushing cyclists off their bikes, young boys forming human blockades on road, mugging, constant chasing and shouting- All of which we experienced on our first days cycle out of Arba Minch and it was enough to confirm we had made the right decision to bus so much, enjoying Ethiopia and not resenting it.
